The Future Internet vision is a holistic one - as described by Ms. Vivianne Reding, the European Commissioner responsible for Information Society and Media - whereby "all network and service platforms technologies called upon to constitute the Internet of tomorrow are looked at as part of a single system." The work of the Future Internet Assembly (FIA), which initiated last year in Slovenia with the signing of the Bled Declaration, focuses on the challenges of the Future Internet from two perspectives: policy making, i.e. Future Internet will improve "the competitiveness of European businesses, create more innovation based growth and jobs, and to further contribute to the social well being of our citizen;" and scientific research, i.e. developing the necessary technologies and networks constituting the vision: an Internet of Things, where every mobile and stationary electronic device will be an active participant in the network; an Internet of Services, where applications live in the network, and data becomes an active entity; an Internet of Content & Media, where most of the contents are generated by end-users; an Internet of Publicity, Privacy and Anonymity, where people and software must understand how much trust to extend to others; an Internet of Mobility and Ubiquity, where connectivity everywhere is expected, and depended upon. All these nascent Internets, and the others that we have yet to imagine, require further research, especially at the interdisciplinary boundaries where opportunities as well as problems lie.

The Future Internet Symposium (FIS) is the research-focused complement to FIA, bringing together the actual scientists whose ongoing work contributes towards meeting the technical challenges behind the Future Internet vision. Following the success of the first symposium in 2008, FIS 2009 invites these multidisciplinary scientists to share their recent approaches and results by submitting research papers by July 12th, tutorial proposals by July 17th, 2009 and demos/posters by July 27th. Come take part in the interdisciplinary symposium and join in the collaborative effort as we increase the technical feasibility of the Future Internet through scientific research.
